Charles Spencer Chaplin (1889-1977) was an English comedian actor, film director and filmmaker, best-known for his works during the silent film era. Chaplin was born in London, England, on April 16th 1889. His father was a versatile vocalist and actor; and his mother was an attractive actress and singer. Having inherited natural talents from his parents, the youngster took to the stage as the best opportunity for a career.

Chaplin was famous for his great sense of humor and slapstick comedy skills. He laid the foundation for modern comedy film, and with Buster Keeton and Harold Lloyd he was known as “the world's three major comedian”. Chaplin's bowler hat and dress looks almost became an important representative of the comedy movie, and many artists have performed later in his own way for reference. His career spanned more than seventy-five years, from childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death at age eighty-eight.

His main works include The Tramp , A Woman of Paris: A Drama of Fate , The Circus , The Great Dictator and Modern Times . “The Tramp” was Charlie Chaplin's most memorable on-screen character, a recognized icon of world cinema most dominant during the silent film era. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Chaplin the 10th greatest male actor of all time.
