The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film based on the Stephen King's novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. It is directed by Frank Darabont and stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The Shawshank Redemption is an allegory for maintaining one's feeling of self-worth when placed in a hopeless position.

A banker named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Even though he proclaims his innocence, he is sentenced to life at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine. But Andy does not crack. He befriends another lifer, Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman). With his smartness, he gets protection from the guards by managing financial matters for the prison employees. With the hope of freedom, he escapes through the tunnel and prison's sewage pipe. Red is finally paroled. He violates his parole and travels to Mexico. On a beach he finds Andy, and the two friends are happily reunited.

During its opening weekend, the film earned $727,000 from thirty-three theaters, which was an average of $22,040 per theater. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1994. It received two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Performance by an Actor, and Best Screenplay. In March 2011, the film was voted by BBC Radio 1 listeners as their favorite film of all time.
