The Venice Film Festival or Venice International Film Festival, founded in 1932, is the oldest international film festival in the world. The film festival is part of the Venice Biennale which was founded by the Venetian City Council in 1895. It has since taken place in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, Venice, Italy. The 71st Festival took place from 27 August to 6 September 2014. The Swedish film A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence won the Golden Lion award. Ann Hui's drama film The Golden Era served as the closing night film.
威尼斯电影节，或称威尼斯国际电影节，创办于1932年，是世界上历史最悠久的国际电影节。1895年威尼斯市议会设立首届威尼斯双年展，从此威尼斯电影节成为其组成部分，每年8月末至9月初于意大利威尼斯利多岛举办。2014年8月27日至9月6日第71届电影节成功举办，瑞典影片《寒枝雀静》摘得最高奖项“金狮奖”。许鞍华导演的剧情片《黄金时代》成为电影节的闭幕电影。

The Golden Lion is awarded as the highest prize to the best film screened in competition. Most times only one and seldom two films can win this honor. Ever since its appearance in 1949, this award has been dominated by European male directors with three female exceptions: Mira Nair from India, Margarethe von Trotta from Germany and Agnes Varda from Belgium. Since 2000, American film has been a major winner of this film festival. The Silver Lion is a supplementary award to the Golden Lion and is not scheduled at an annual basis. Sometimes it is appointed to the second best film screened in competition while other times awarded to the Best Short Film or the Best Directing. There are also “The Volpi Cups” awarded to best actor or actress, the “Special Lion” for an overall work to a director or actor of a film presented in the main competition section, and so on.
金狮奖是威尼斯电影节的最高奖项，颁发给最佳影片，大多数年份仅一部优秀影片可获此殊荣，但有的年份这一大奖由两部影片共享。金狮奖自1949年设立以来，大多都被欧洲男性导演捧走，历史上仅有3位女性导演的作品获此殊荣，分别是印度裔的米拉·奈尔、德国的玛格丽特·冯·特罗塔和比利时的阿涅丝·瓦尔达。自2000年以来美国电影一直是威尼斯电影节的获奖大户。银狮奖是威尼斯电影节仅次于金狮奖的奖项，并非每年都有。有时颁发给角逐金狮奖却落选的影片，有时颁发给最佳短片和最佳导演。威尼斯电影节还设有最佳男女演员奖和最佳导演等特殊奖项。
