New Year's Day
元旦

New Year's Day is probably the world's most celebrated public holiday. It is observed on 1 January, the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar as well as the Julian calendar used in the Roman Empire since 45 BC.

It originally was dedicated to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings for whom the first month of the year (January) is named. After Julius Caesar reformed the calendar in 46 BC and was subsequently murdered, the Roman Senate voted to deify him on the 1st January 42 BC in honor of his life and his institution of the new rationalized calendar.

This day is traditionally a religious feast, but since the 1900s it has also become an occasion to celebrate the night of 31 December, called New Year's Eve. There are fireworks at midnight at the moment the New Year arrives. There is one thing that all New Year's Eve parties have in common: the countdown to midnight. When the clock strikes twelve, revelers give a loud cheer, pop champagne corks and give each other a kiss. They then link arms and sing the song called Auld Lang's Syne.

On New Year's Day, people in certain countries gather on beaches and run into the water to celebrate the New Year. In Canada, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands this is very popular.
