Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Established originally by the Massachusetts legislature and soon thereafter named for John Harvard (its first benefactor), Harvard is the United States' oldest institution of higher learning, and the Harvard Corporation is its first chartered corporation. Harvard has been highly ranked by many international and domestic university rankings. From a poll done by The Princeton Review , Harvard is the second most commonly named “Dream College”, both for students and parents in 2013, and was the first nominated by parents in 2009.

The University is organized into eleven separate academic units — ten faculties and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study — with campuses throughout the Boston metropolitan area. Harvard has the largest financial endowment of any academic institution in the world, standing at $32.3 billion as of June 2013.
