Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of St. Peter at Westminster, is a large, mainly Gothic church in the City of Westminster, London. It is located just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. As one of the most notable religious buildings in the United Kingdom, it has been the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English monarchs.

According to a tradition, the Abbey was first founded in 616 on the present site. Between 1042 and 1052 King Edward the Confessor began rebuilding St. Peter's Abbey to provide himself with a royal burial church. It was not completed until around 1090, but was consecrated on 28 December 1065, only a week before Edward's death. Henry Ⅲ rebuilt the abbey in honor of Edward the Confessor, whose relics were placed in a shrine in the sanctuary.

Until the death of George II of Great Britain in 1760, most kings and queens were buried in the abbey. Westminster Abbey is also the place where some of the most significant people in the nation's history are buried or commemorated. The practice spread to include generals, admirals, politicians, doctors and scientists such as Isaac Newton, buried on 4 April 1727, and Charles Darwin, buried 26 April 1882. In 1987 it was listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
