时尚雾都——英国伦敦

London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. It is the most populous city in the United Kingdom with a metropolitan area of over thirteen million inhabitants. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium. Back to the early 20th century, the abusive use of coal in households had emitted an overwhelming amount of smoke, which, combined with the humid climate, put London residents into dangerous explosion to polluted air. That's how London has got its notorious name of “The Smoke” or sometimes the “City of Fog”.
伦敦是英国的首都和英格兰的首府，是英国人口最多的城市，都会区人口达到1300万。两千多年前，罗马人建立了这个坐落在泰晤士河畔的城市，并将其命名为“Londinium”，从此它便成为人们的主要定居地。20世纪初，伦敦大部分家庭都使用煤作为家用燃料，产生的大量烟雾加上伦敦的湿润气候，使伦敦居民置身于大量有害的污染空气之中。伦敦由此获得一个坏名声，被称作“大烟”或者“雾都”。

London is now a leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, healthcare, media, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence.

London has a diverse range of peoples and cultures, and more than three hundred languages are spoken within Greater London. It contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; Kew Gardens; the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St. Margaret's Church; and the historic settlement of Greenwich. Other famous landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, and The Shard. The London Underground is the oldest underground railway network in the world.
