有人问： 名词所有格符号用于无生命的事物时，它仅限于时间、地点和距离吗？

一般语法书在这个项目上仅举了用于时间的所有格 （如today's paper）、用于地点的所有格（如China's capital）和用于距离的所有格（如two miles' walk），但这只是对初学者而言的。实际上，'s所有格也可用于表示价值的无生命名词，如two dollars' worth of stamps。 有时汽车、飞机、轮船等无生命名词亦可用's 所有格，如the car's exhaust, the plane's engines, the ship's propeller。

此外，还有不少固定说法中的表无生命事物的名词也必须用's所有格，如： keep somebody at arm's length, at death's door, the earth's surface, for goodness' sake, to one's heart's content, journey's end, nature's pleasures, treason's charge等。
