cattle和sheep, deer等不是同一类名词

有人问: 有的书上说,单复数同形的名词cattle,sheep, deer等用作主语时,其谓语动词的单复数应按句意而定。可是也有人讲这些名词后皆跟复数动词。请问cattle, sheep等可后跟单数动词吗?

上述几个名词并不属于同一类。sheep, deer等确是单复同形名词。其后跟单数或复数动词应由句意决定,如:

(1)A sheep is an animal.

(2)Sheep are animals.

但cattle是无单数形式的集体名词,与people(人,人们), police属于同一类。这一类名词只有复形,皆表复数概念,故须用复数动词,如:

(3)Cattle were sold for nothing.

这种名词还有一个特点,即其前可用数词作为修饰语,如80 cattle (=80 head of cattle)。再如:

(4)People often say such things.

(5)Three people were present.

(6)The police are on his track.

(7)Several hundred police are on duty.
