有人问： mistake和noise到底是可数名词还是不可数名词？

mistake和noise都是抽象名词。抽象名词多不可数，如honesty, admiration, music, carefulness。但mistake和noise却有所不同。mistake常用作可数名词，例如：

(1)Sorry, I made a mistake .

(2)We all make mistakes sometimes.

(3)There are many spelling mistakes in your composition.

然而，它有时却不可数，如：

(4)I took your coat by mistake .（by mistake是固定词组）

(5)Nor are the most conscientious compilations of Natural History...free from the same heinousness of mistake .（摘自美国名著Moby Dick）

noise常被用作不可数名词，如：

(6)Try not to make so much noise .

(7)I hate noise .

但也常被用作可数名词，如：

(8)Dolphins produce a great variety of noises .
