具体到sky一词，我们首先应搞清楚它的本义。根据一般词典的释义，它一是指the upper air，一是指the space surrounding the earth。前者表物质，后者表空间。但在英语里， 表物质的名词也好，表空间的名词也好，它们大都可有复数形式，以表示其部分化、具体化或个别化： 如表物质的复数形式有waters, sands, winds, rains等，表空间的复数形式有spaces, areas, expanses, surfaces等。这些复数形式有的可数，如areas； 有的则不可数，如waters。sky也是一样，它也有复数形式skies，和waters一样，也不可数。

sky如何具体化为skies的，我们知道得不多。究其源，盖与cloud有关。不论如何，在当代英语中，二者在本义上，以及在用法上，区别都不甚大。根据我们的观察，复数形式skies 似乎多用在下面一些场合之中：

1. 复数形式skies多用在富有诗意富有情感的文体中，如：

(1)The skies were tinged with pink.

(2)The west wind came up again. All nature seemed in a rage. The skies were cloudless.

(3)He raised a mortal to the skies , she drew an angel down.

2. 复数形式skies常用来表示天气如何，如：

(4)On the area weather map, most stations in southern Michigan are reporting sunny skies .

(5)The papers forecast clear skies tomorrow.

3. 复数形式skies也常用来表一个国家的领空或上空，如：

(6)They wanted to buy our ports and skies and pay with billions of the American people's money for civil war.

(7)A downed pilot, if he were unharmed, could soon take another plane into the skies .

4. 以上例句中的skies一般皆可与单数形式sky交换使用，但在某些习语中则必须用复数形式，如：

(8)Indeed he was lauded by many persons to the skies .
