这两道选择题答案均为D，但我查了身边的一些书，发现有的有冠词，有的没有冠词，似乎很难掌握。

上述句（1）与句（2）之所以应选用零冠词（即不用定冠词或不定冠词），是因为这两个句子中的principal和dean皆表特指的唯一的职务或职位。这种特有的职务或职位具有一种抽象的品质（quality）,与一般的表实际身份的具体实质(substance)不同，后者则需要用一定冠词the。试比较：

(3)He was headmaster of Rugby.

(4)The man we met just now was the head master of Rugby.

上述句（3）中的headmaster即强调职务或职位；句（4）中的the headmaster则指the man的具体身份，以别于其他不同的身份。

表职务或职位的名词的第一个字母亦可大写，如：

(5)He is Rector of the University.

即使如此，Rector之前亦可用定冠词限定。但请注意，the Rector of the University并非指其为一般的具体社会身份，而恰恰相反，是使其职务或职位更加突出了。
