这里应用过去一般时表“过去的过去”

有一读者问这样一道选择题：

(1)My books that a short time ago_________so tiresome, so heavy to carry, now seemed to me like old friends.

A. seemed　B. had seemed

C. have seemed　D. seem

为什么答案是A不是B呢？

应选A，因为其前有表具体时间的状语a short time ago。在这种情况下，表“过去的过去”的谓语动词一般应用过去一般时而不用过去完成时，再如：

(2)That call was from my wife. She arrived home this afternoon. （用过去一般时arrived表过去的过去，因为其后有具体的时间状语this afternoon）
