句中的when是从属连词，而从属连词是引导从句的，怎么能引导一个分词短语呢？
句中的when making this sound是一种特殊的分词短语，实际上等于when you are making this sound，所以有不少语法家称它为缩略的从句。这种缩略结构要比从句简洁，尤其常用在笔语中。除when外，从属连词while亦可引导分词短语，如：
(2)While working in the factory he had improved a lot of machines。
