有一读者问：高中英语第二册上有这样一句话：
(1)The air was so warm and bright, and I could hear birds whistling at the edge of the woods,...请问：at the edge of 与 on the edge of 有何不同？
at the edge of 与 on the edge of 皆表地点，往往可以通用，但前者强调位置，可译作“在……的边缘”，后者强调表面，可译作“在……的边缘上”。再如：
(2)He stood at （或 on）the edge of the field.
但当 on the edge of 用作比喻时则不可代之以 at the edge of, 如：
(3)In those days many people were on the edge of starvation.
了解了上述例句中 at 与 on 的区别，按照类比的方法，下面一些短语中 at 与 on 的区别也都可迎刃而解：
(4)at the brink of war 在战争的边缘
on the brink of war 在战争的边缘上
(5)at the side of the road 在路边
on the side of the road 在路边上
还可包括下面一些短语：

on the top of the hill 在山顶上面

on the bottom of the sea 在海底的上面
注意 at 除表示位置外，往往具有“有意识”或有“目的性”的含义，试比较：
(8)at the door （指有意识地“在门口”，如等人等）
on the door （仅指“在门上”）
(9)at the window （指有意识地“在窗口”，如远眺等）
on the window （仅指“在窗户上”）
(10)at the river （指有意识地“在河上”，如钓鱼等）
on the river （仅指“在河面上或河边上”）
(11)at the sea （指有意识地“在海上”，如航行等）
on the sea （仅指“在海面上”）
有时 at 与 on 则几乎无甚区别，如意指“在街角上”下面任一说法皆可以用：

on the corner of the street
但如细加区别，则 at 强调位置，on 除表位置外还有立体的含义。
