有一读者问： 《新英语教程》阅读第四册有这样一句话：
(1)Psychology is a young science compared to other scientific disciplines, and recent years have seen a virtual explosion in psychological research.
compare可与to或with搭配，但前者意为“比拟，喻为”，后者意为“两者作比显出异同”。故此处用to似欠妥当，我以为用with更为准确，也不易引起学生的混乱。不当之处，望老师多多指教。
这是一个有争议多年的问题。不少编写英语语法书或写作指导书的人仍认为compare与with连用时应意为“作比”，compare与to连用时应意为“比拟，喻为”。但在当代英语中，作为谓语及物动词，compare...with表“作比”，compare...to表“比拟，喻为”，似乎仍不失为一条规则，虽然有不少人并不遵守它。但作为过去分词，意为“作比”时，compared不论与with连用（如[as] compared with），或是与to连用（如[as] compared to），二者实际上已无甚区别了。因此，上述句（1）中的compared to并无不妥当之处，虽然亦可用compared with。有趣的是，在当代英语中，作为谓语不及物动词，compare with与compare to亦皆可用来表示“可比”或“匹敌”，虽然仍有不少人主张只可说compare with，不可说compare to。现举可用compare to作比的实例如下：
(2)No other auto race in the U. S. quite compares to the Sebring grind.
(3)Ham and bamboo shoots did not compare to those made at Ying's.
