有一读者问：高中英语课本第一册上有这样一句话：
“If I had missed,” said William Tell, “and had shot too low, I was going to use this arrow on you.”
课本上是这样译的：“万一我没射中，”威廉·泰尔说，“或者射得太低了，我就打算用这支箭射你。”这里将原文译作“或者”，不知为什么？
这里所以用and是因为它所后接的had shot too low与其前的had missed是一回事，只是后者说得较前者更为具体而已。所以，将and译作“或者”是不妥当的。我们认为将and省去不译为好。
