有一读者问：连词 if 作“是否”解时可否与 or 连用？语法书上说不可，但我们却遇到这样的句子：
(1)The cat saw the parrot and wanted to know if it was a bird or not.
对连词 if 意谓“是否”时是否可以与 or 连用的问题，答案是肯定的。如果你查阅一下具有权威性的《朗文当代英语词典》，你就会看到 whether 一词的定义就是 if...or not。所以问题中所引的句子是完全正确的。含有 if...or 的句子常可碰到，再如：
(2)I don't care if they join us or not.
(3)I asked them if they wanted meat or fish.
连词 if 不但可用以表示两种选择，甚至可表示两种以上的选择，如：
(4)I don't care if you do your homework or play outside or go to bed.
但要注意，连词 if 作“是否”解时，其后一般不可直接跟 or 或 or not，如一般不说 I will write you if or not I can come,但可用 whether 说：
(5)I will write you whether or not I can come.
顺便提及，if （=是否）没有 whether 那么正式，它常用在口语中。当它引导宾语从句时，其前常用 ask, doubt, wonder, learn, know, remember, determine 等动词，也可用 depend on, find out, don't care 等短语。除此之外，if （=是否）与 whether 还有一些不同之处，可参看前文有关部分，这里就恕不赘述了。
