有一读者问： 有这样一个句子：
(1)Then he began to talk to us about the French language, saying that it was the most beautiful tongue in the world and that we must keep it with us and never forget it.
这句话为什么用两个that? 可否省去第二个that?
这里的两个that从句是并列关系，都是saying的宾语。第二个that一般不可省去，否则就会犯语法错误。再如：
(2)We believe that every profession produces its own best and that different people can find themselves succeeding in different fields.
第一个that有时可省，但第二个that仍不可省，如：
(3)I gather he had had one hemorrhage already and that he knew that another one would be fatal. （gather之后的第一个that被省去）
上述情况皆属引导宾语从句的that，其实定语从句也是一样，如：
(4)She put up three big tile-roofed schoolrooms with the money that she made by selling pigs and that her father earned from hair-cutting. （第一个that可省，第二个that不可省）
顺便说一下，如用which代替第二个that, which亦不可省，如：
(5)I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast.
但是话又得说回来，常言说，没有无例外的规则，请看下面一例：
(6)To make the idea of non-smoking areas popular will not benefit only non-smokers, but the whole society. I hope there will be more concern for this problem and other feasible measures will be suggested.
你看在这个句子中，动词hope后不仅省去了第一个宾语从句的that，连第二个宾语从句的that也省去了。
