有一读者问：有这样两个句子：
(1)I wonder whether it will rain or not.
(2)I'm not quite sure whether I have a copy.
whether 之后有时跟 or not，有时则没有。不知二者有何区别？我曾看到 whether 从句不可用于否定句，对吗？为什么上述句（2）不可用 if?
我们对此答案如下：
1. whether 之后有无 or not，在意义上无甚不同，只是加上 or not 可使“是否”的意味更加鲜明而已。
2. whether 从句可用于否定句，除如上述句（2）外，再如：
(3)I don't know whether he is at home or at the office.
3. 上述句（2）之所以不用 if 替换 whether，是因为 sure 之后省去了介词of，而介词之后一般不可后接 if 从句，再如：
(4)There is some doubt as to whether the document is genuine.（as to 后不可接 if 从句）
