有一读者问：
(1)It was not till 2000.
这句话的意思是“直到2000年”，为什么till之前要用否定词not?
till或until之前用否定结构表示否定，即动作在till短语或从句所表的时间之前未发生。但在till短语或从句所表的时间却发生了。这是一常用英语说法，与汉语不同。例如：
(2)He did not come till ten o'clock. （表示ten o'clock之前他没有来，10点钟时他来了。汉语常译作： 他直到10点钟才来。）
请注意上述句（1）是一省略句，其后省去了that...，再如：
(3)It was not till yesterday that I got the news.
其实，till（直到……为止）之前亦可用肯定结构，如：
(4)He talked till he became hoarse.
(5)Goodbye till next week.
