有一谈者问：什么叫做间接引语的独立形式？
间接引语一般是由引述动词引导的从句形式或结构。但有时作者为了使叙事生动，省去了所有的从句形式，采用独立句的形式表示间接引语，这种间接引语就叫做间接引语的独立形式（或自由间接引语）。现从英国名著《有产者》（高尔斯华绥著）摘一小段如下：
James looked at his daughter-in-law. That unseen glance of his was cold and dubious. Appeal and fear were in it. Why should he be worried like this? It was very like all nonsense; women were funny things! They exaggerated so, you didn't know what to believe; and then nobody told him anything, he had to find out everything for himself.
在这一段中，从第四句起直至末尾全是间接引语独立形式。
