有一读者问：高一英语课本上有这样一句：
(1)Nearby were two canoes in which they had come to the island.
我们知道这里不可用 where 替换 in which，但请问何时应用 in which, 何时应用 where 呢？
in which 和 where 皆可引导一定语从句，而且有时可以互换，但二者的含义有所不同。试比较：
(2)This is the place in which I grew up.
(3)This is the place where I grew up.
这两个句子皆可译作“这是我成长的地方”，但 in which 意指“在……之内”，强调范围, where 则纯粹指地点。例（3）中的 the place 常可省去，例（2）中 the place 则不可省。但当 in which 另有它义时，如问中的 in which 意指“乘着两只独木舟”时，则不可用 where 代替。
