有一读者问： 在The Power and The Glory 一书中有这样一句话：

这个句子中的drunk之前为何没有so? 我只知道so...that结构中常可省去that，难道so也可省去吗？
是的，so...that结构中的that在口语中常可省去，如：
(2)It was so dark I couldn't see anything.
但在正式或古旧的英语中，so也可不用，只剩下that，上述句（1）即是一例，再如：
(3)He was angry that he could not speak.
(4)He was hurt that he was speaking with less tenderness.
以上谈的都是so...that表结果或程度的情况。其实，so...that表目的时，在正式或古旧英语中，so亦可不用，如：
(5)We eat that we may live.
(6)I refused to dine with him that I might the sooner see you again, my dear.
