有一读者问：我知道可以说：
(1)What's on the table?
但不知道能否说：
(2)What are on the table?
句（1）中的疑问代词 what 用作主语，表单数概念，所以应后接 is。句（2）也对，其中的疑问代词 what 用作主语，表复数概念，所以应后接 are。但说话人如不确知主语 what 的数念，其后则须用 is，如：
(3)What is in your pocket?
顺便提及，疑问代词 who 用作主语时，与 what 用作主语时一样。如：
(4)Who's there?（说话人确知 who 表单数概念）
(5)Who are there?（说话人确知 who 表复数概念）
但说话人如果不确知主语 who 所表的数念，则仍用句（4）。然而在口语中，当说话人明知主语 who 所表的是复数概念时，却依旧用 who is ...?如：
(6)Who's making that noise?
(7)—Well, they're giving him a hell of a party on his birthday.
—Who is? （可译作“谁们？”）
—Everybody.
