有一读者问:高一英语课本中有这么一句话:
(1)They had often heard of elephants, but they had never seen one, for, being blind, how could they?
这里的连词for和现在分词短语being blind都意味着“因为”,岂不是重复了吗?
连词 for意谓“因为”,这是不言而喻的。问题在于如何看待这里的现在分词短语being blind。现在分词短语可以用作表示时间、原因、结果、条件、方式等的状语,并不是从其语法关系得出的结论,而是从其逻辑关系看待的结果。从其语法关系来看,现在分词短语和现在分词本身一样,仍具有形容词的性质。事实上,置于主语之前的现在分词短语也并非总是用作状语,而却像是用作主语补足语,如:
(2)Containing 39 percent alcohol,the liquor accounts for half of the factory's 100 tons of exports each year.
(3)Originating in Jiangsu Province, South China, over 400 years ago, Kunqu reached its peak in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)and dominated the Chinese opera world for about 200 years.
以being开头的现在分词短语确是常有“由于……”的内涵,但也不可一概而论,例如在上述所提问的句子里,being blind即可看作是主语补足语,不具有“由于……”的含义。
