深入解读

Stringent 是一个与小站(微信公众号:田间小站)之前推送过的 strident 较为形似的单词。同时,该词与熟词 strain (压力、重负;尽力拉)和 strict (严格的)同源也同词根 strain, strict, string (拉紧),都是源自拉丁语 stringere (压紧、缩紧、绑紧、拉紧)。

其中, stringent 于17世纪经 stringere 的现在分词 stringentem 进入英语,原指味道“涩的”,同 astringent 。不过到了1846年后开始转为表示今义指法律、规则、规章、程序、要求、条件等“严格的、严厉的、严苛的”,多指严格到不允许有任何的松动、松懈或选择的自由,通常相对于执行过程中的质量而言更强调最终的效果,且往往意味着限制、控制甚至是强制,比如:

  • 新上任的政府宣布将对武器的持有实行更严格的控制。
    The newly inaugurated government announced that there would be more stringent controls on the possession of weapons.

而将 stringent 用在金融财政领域时,则表示“紧缩的、短缺的、不足的”或“银根紧的”,主要指在一个经济体中对货币数量进行严格控制从而没有足够的资金可供借贷,比如:

  • 他讲演的大部分时间都在反驳对他紧缩银根的经济政策的批评。
    He spent most of his speech rebutting criticisms of his stringent economic policies.
