Prosper 一词源自拉丁语 prosperus （繁荣的、幸运的、有利的），于14世纪中期经古法语 prosperer 或者直接由拉丁语 prosperare （使成功、使幸福）进入英语，即用来表示国家、经济、生意、人等“兴旺、繁荣、昌盛、富有、成功”，主要指企事业经营取得成功，尤其是在经济、财务或物质上取得成功，比如：
- 这个社会弃儿靠着坚毅顽强和勤劳不懈发达起来了。
With great perseverance and untiring industry, the pariah prospered. - 这家濒临破产的公司在他的管理下兴旺了起来。
The moribund company prospered under his management.
此外， prosper 还可以进一步用来表示身体“变得更强壮或健康”，比如：
- 在这种酷热的天气里，没有一种作物能长好。
