Coddle 是一个与小站之前推送过的 cuddle 十分形似的单词，两者只隔第二个字母不同。
该词源自拉丁语 calidium （热饮、温的酒水），17世纪时可能由名词 caudle （供病人食用的粥汤等热饮）发展而来，作动词表示“用文火煮”，也就是在略低于沸点的水里缓慢而温和地烹调某物，尤其是煮鸡蛋。
从这个概念出发，到了1815年后，最早于英国作家简·奥斯汀的长篇小说《爱玛》（Emma）中，开始用 coddle 引申表示“悉心照料、娇养、娇惯、溺爱”，常作贬义词使用，主要指以纵容或过度的关心、体贴、照顾或保护等方式对待某人，比如：
