Temperate 是一个很容易让人联想起熟词 temperature 来的单词，这两个单词与常见单词 temper 同源，都源自于拉丁语 temperare （缓和、调节）。
其中， temperate 于14世纪末经拉丁语 temperatus （克制的、约束的、有限的、温和的、清醒的、冷静的、稳定的）进入英语后，即用来指人及其行为、习惯等“温和的、有节制的”以及“不极端的、不过分的”，常意味着刻意控制自己的情感、激情、食欲、欲望等，或者限制行使自己的权利、权力以及特权，绝不超越正确或正当的界限，常作正式用语使用，比如：
