深入解读

Billow 是一个与常见单词 pillow 只差首字母不同的单词，可以一并联想记忆。

该词源自古北欧语 bylgja （波浪、巨浪），16世纪中期进入英语后也是用来表示“巨浪、波涛”，诗歌中有时也用复数 billows 表示“大海”。

虽然这个含义现已过时，但从其出发， billow 引申出了现在的常用含义指“波涛般滚滚向前之物”，通常是云、烟或蒸汽，也包括声音、军队、人群等，比如：

• 沿街而去踵趾相接的示威群众
  billows of demonstrators marching down the street
