区别辨析accident、incident、event、occurrence与happening

accident、incident、event、occurrence与happening这些名词均有“事故、事件”之意。

accident ：强调偶然或意外发生的不幸事情。

• I didn't mean to break it─ it was an accident.
  我不是故意打碎它的——这是个意外。
• 这位德高望重的老人负责处理这次车祸的善后工作。
  This venerable old man is to deal with the aftermath of the traffic accident.
• 这一事故在当地报纸上只有小篇幅报道。但生还者一再指控安全标准执行不严。
  The accident merited only a small paragraph in the local paper. But there have been repeated allegations from survivors that safety standards had been lax.

incident ：既可指小事件或附带事件，又可指政治上具有影响的事件或事变。

• His bad behaviour was just an isolated incident.
  他的不良行为只是个别事件。
• a border/diplomatic incident
  边境 / 外交冲突

event ：可指任何大小事件，但尤指历史上的重大事件。

• The election was the main event of 2004.
  那次选举是2004年的主要大事。

occurrence和happening这两个词多指日常生活中发生的一般事件，有时也指偶然发生的事。

• a common/everyday/frequent/regular occurrence
  司空见惯的 / 每天发生的 / 经常发生的 / 定期发生的事情
• There have been strange happenings here lately.
  这儿最近发生了一些怪事。
