Reinstate 是本周《经济学人》（2025年5月3日刊）标题为“Donald Trump is creating chaos at the IRS”一文中出现的一个单词：

Since then some 20,000 workers have agreed to take deferred resignation while some 7,000 probational employees have been fired (a lawsuit is ongoing, and they were reinstated, but are now all on leave).

从拼写上来看，很容易想当然地将 reinstate 误以为是由 rein （缰绳；控制）+ state （状况、状态）构成而来。其实从词源上来看， reinstate 则是由前缀 re- （再、重复、重新）+ instate （任命、使就职、授予……职位；置……于特定地位）构成而来。

那么 reinstate 的本义也就是指“使恢复原职、使重返岗位”以及伴随而来的“使复得原有权利”，常用搭配 reinstate sb (in/as sth) 表示使某人恢复原被剥夺的工作或职位。

在英美职场中，如果有员工因为争议遭到解雇，后又经调查取证查明清白，雇主们通常需要通过“恢复原职（reinstatement）”这一操作来体现程序正义。比如：

• 调查后她重新回到了自己的岗位。
  She was reinstated in her post after the investigation.

从这个概念出发， reinstate 还被用来拓展指“修复、使复原、使恢复原状”或“把……放回原处”，侧重指恢复到以前的位置或有效状态。比如：

• 恢复死刑
  reinstate capital punishment
• 恢复受损财产
  reinstate damaged property
• 恢复已删除的文本或文件
  reinstate deleted text or files

那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：自那以后，约有2万名员工同意延期辞职，同时约有7000名试用期员工被解雇（相关诉讼正在进行中，他们已被恢复原职，但现在都处于休假状态）。
