Atrophy 是本周《经济学人》（2025年9月20日刊）标题为“America is falling out of love with Israel”一文的副标题中出现的一个单词：

The sudden dissent on the right in America comes as Israel’s diplomatic support is atrophying around the world.

从拼写上来看， atrophy 一词比较好记，就是在常见单词 trophy （奖杯，奖牌；战利品，狩猎纪念品）前面多了一个字母 a ，两者可以一并联想记忆。

从词源上来看， atrophy 源自于希腊语 atrophia （消瘦），先后经晚期拉丁语 atrophia 和法语 atrophie （萎缩）最早于17世纪10年代进入英语而来，其本义也是用在医学上指“萎缩”，常意味着身体组织或器官因为缺乏使用、疾病或衰老而萎缩，既可以作名词也可以作动词使用。比如：

• 脑萎缩
  cerebral atrophy
• 肌肉萎缩
  muscle atrophy
• 防止软骨硬化和萎缩的锻炼
  exercises to avoid jelling and atrophy of cartilage

从这个概念出发， atrophy 进而引申泛指“萎缩、衰退、减退”，侧重指事物的尺寸、程度、影响力等由于使用不足、缺乏维护或未受保护而逐渐变小或下降，常意味着一种缓慢、渐进且往往不可逆的衰退，既可以作名词也可以作动词使用。比如：

• 缺乏练习会导致你的语言技能退化。
  Lack of practice leads to the atrophy of your language skills.
• 从事一份平凡的工作多年后，她的精神枯萎了，她的才华萎缩了。
  Her spirit shrivelled and her talent atrophied after years of working in a mundane job.

那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：美国右翼突然出现的异议，正值以色列在全球范围内的外交支持日渐萎缩。
