(1) 在现代英语中，before 一般不用作表示地点的介词，而是用in front of。

• I think I'll put the desk in front of the window.(不用before)
  我想我会把书桌放在窗户前。
• There's a car parked right in front of our gate, and I can't get out!
  一辆汽车就停在我们大门前，我出不去了！

 (2) 但这也不绝对。

• She knelt down before the fire to warm herself.
  她跪在火前取暖。

* 特别在以下几种情况中，before可用来表示地点：

①说明事物出现的顺序(如在名单上)。

• I think your name comes before mine.
  我想你的名字排在我的前面。

②表示当着某人的面(in the presence of sb.)。

• I will not have you talking indecently before our guests.
  我不能让你在客人面前讲不体面的话。

③用在right before my eyes, before my very eyes短语中。

• He did such a thing before my very eyes!
  他就在我眼前干了这样的事！
