(1) ①opposite常用来表示一对相反的意思，如：black and white, good and bad, calm and agitated(平静和焦急不安)。

②opposite还可作“对面的，相反的”解。

• He has ideas opposite to mine.
  他的想法跟我的正相反。

③opposite可作介词，表示“在……对面”。

• The bus stopped just opposite the post office.
  公共汽车正好停在邮局对面。

 (2) ①contrary主要用于短语on the contrary，含有“其反面是对的”意味。

• A: I suppose the job wasn't very interesting?
  我想这工作没多大意思吧？
  B: On the contrary, it was fascinating, I loved it.
  恰恰相反，它很吸引人，我热爱这一行。

＊另有短语on the other hand，用来表示问题的另一面：

• The job wasn't very interesting, but on the other hand , it was well paid.
  这工作不是很有趣，但另一方面，它的报酬很不错。

②contrary还可构成 to the contrary和contrary to 短语。前者表示:a)与这相反的，有相反情况；b)尽管……。后者表示“与……相反，违反，不顾”。

• We all knew she was unhappy, all her talk to the contrary .
