(1) cop out (of)可表示“食言，反悔，逃避(责任)；从社会、党派中隐退、逃避”。其后可接“责任、社会”等名词，也可接-ing形式。

• He said he would help us and then he copped out .
  他说他将帮助我们，可后来他却反悔了。
• You can't cop out of raising your children.
  你不能逃避抚养孩子的责任。
• Jack didn't like normal society, so he copped out of it and joined a hippy commune.
  杰克不喜欢正常的社会生活，于是他逃避社会并搬进了嬉皮士的群居社区。

 (2) fight shy of意为“逃避，避开；不愿(做某事)”，后接人、事物，也可接-ing形式。有时可与cop out of换用。

• You can't fight shy of/cop out of your responsibility for your children.
  你不能逃避抚养孩子的责任。
• I always fight shy of swimming in cold water.
  我始终不愿在冷水中游泳。
