区别辨析 cruel, brutal, inhuman, savage, barbarous, fierce 与 ruthless

cruel, brutal, inhuman, savage, barbarous, fierce 与 ruthless 这些词都含有“残忍的、野蛮的”意思。

 (1) cruel意为“残酷的,无情的”,指对别人的痛苦漠不关心,并含有乐于看别人受苦或使别人痛苦的意思。

  • It was cruel of him to make the donkey carry such a heavy load.
    他让驴子驮这样重的东西,真是残忍。
  • It was cruel of Tom to tease the boy like that.
    汤姆那样取笑那男孩,真是冷酷。

 (2) brutal意为“凶残的,残酷的,残暴的”,指极端的、野兽般的残忍,含不择手段的意味。

  • Many a rich businessman reached the top by trampling on others in the most brutal way.
    许多富商靠极其残酷地践踏别人而爬上去。
  • Children were rent (away) from their mothers' arms by the brutal soldiers.
    凶残的士兵把孩子们从母亲的怀抱中夺走了。

 (3) inhuman意为“非人的,残酷的”,指缺乏同情心、仁爱等人类特有的良好的品质。

  • Abusing children or the aged is both immoral and inhuman , especially in such a highly civilized society.
    虐待孩子和老人是不道德的、无人性的,尤其是在这样一个高度文明的社会。
  • Only an inhuman mother would desert her child.

 (4) savage指缺乏文明人应有的教养,尤指在愤怒或冲动时表现出的粗野蛮横,含有野蛮的意味。

  • The poor man received a savage beating from the thugs.

 (5) barbarous指极端野蛮、残忍以至于令人感到震惊。

  • It is barbarous to keep a lively boy cooped up like that.

 (6) fierce意为“猛烈的,凶猛的”,指天性凶恶,令人害怕。

  • Though seemingly fierce , the dog was gentle really.

  • I have a notion that he was just the sort of wild, fierce , bandit hero whom I could have consented to give with my hand.

 (7) ruthless指为达到目的,毫不在乎是否对他人造成伤害。

  • He is a shrewd and sometimes ruthless adversary.

  • He can be ruthless in getting what he wants, but I believe he would stop short of blackmail.
