cruel, brutal, inhuman, savage, barbarous, fierce 与 ruthless 这些词都含有“残忍的、野蛮的”意思。
(1) cruel意为“残酷的,无情的”,指对别人的痛苦漠不关心,并含有乐于看别人受苦或使别人痛苦的意思。
- It was cruel of him to make the donkey carry such a heavy load.
他让驴子驮这样重的东西,真是残忍。 - It was cruel of Tom to tease the boy like that.

(2) brutal意为“凶残的,残酷的,残暴的”,指极端的、野兽般的残忍,含不择手段的意味。
- Many a rich businessman reached the top by trampling on others in the most brutal way.
许多富商靠极其残酷地践踏别人而爬上去。 - Children were rent (away) from their mothers' arms by the brutal soldiers.

(3) inhuman意为“非人的,残酷的”,指缺乏同情心、仁爱等人类特有的良好的品质。
- Abusing children or the aged is both immoral and inhuman , especially in such a highly civilized society.

(4) savage指缺乏文明人应有的教养,尤指在愤怒或冲动时表现出的粗野蛮横,含有野蛮的意味。

(5) barbarous指极端野蛮、残忍以至于令人感到震惊。
