distribute, dispense, divide 与 allocate 这些词都含有“分配”的意思。

 (1) distribute指把某物分成一定的部分或数量，各部分的数量不一定相等，然后分给某些人或地方。

• They are distributing handbills among the passers-by on the street.
  他们在街上给行人分发传单。
• Last year the company did not distribute dividends to its shareholders.
  公司去年没给股东分红。

 (2) dispense意为“配发，分发，给予”，指分配给一群人每人应得的份额，定量分配。

• On Saturday morning, my father solemnly dispensed pocket money to each of the children.
  星期六上午我父亲郑重其事地给每个孩子发零花钱.
• Medical supplies were dispensed only to those who obviously needed them.
  医药用品只分发给那些摆明着需要它们的人。

 (3) divide指把整体按一定比例分成若干份，通常是主动、自愿地分开。

• Her mother divided the cake into eight equal sections.
  她妈妈把蛋糕切成一样大小的八块。

 (4) allocate尤指经正式决定，将一定数量的财物或任务分配给某些人、单位或事业等。

• A quarter of the total expenditure has been allocated to the public services.
  经费总数的四分之一已拨给公用事业。
• A section of the building has been allocated for special research purposes.
  大楼的一部分被划归作特种研究之用。
