区别辨析 in the evening, on the evening of, towards evening 与 on the eve of

(1) in the evening意为“在晚上”。在早晨/上午 in the morning;在下午 in the afternoon;在夜间 in the night, at night, during the night。

  • It always takes me ages to wake up in the morning in winter.
    冬天早晨我总是需要很久才能醒来。

 (2) at night与during the day(在白天)相对而言,是泛指。

  • I'd like to work at night , and sleep during the day.
    我喜欢夜间工作,白天睡觉。

 (3) 如要具体说哪一天的上午、下午、晚上等,或者要对其进行描述,就要用on,而不用in。

  • See you (on) Monday morning .
    周一早晨见。
  • On a cold afternoon in January, John came from Washington to see me.
    在1月的一个寒冷的下午,约翰从华盛顿来看我。
  • The story happened on a rainy evening/morning , in the month of May.
    这故事发生在5月一个下雨的晚上/上午。
  • I don't like to see people on the nights when I've been working late.
    在我工作到很晚的夜晚,我不喜欢会见人。
  • He arrived in New York late on the evening of the 15th of May.

 (4) on the eve of 意为“在……除夕;在……前夕”,也可用于比喻意义。

  • On New Year's Eve I got a letter from my brother.
    新年除夕,我接到弟弟一封信。
  • Try on. Don't give up. You're on the eve of success.
    继续来,别放弃,你马上就要成功了。

 (5) towards evening意为“天快黑时,傍晚”。

  • It was raining harder and harder towards evening that day.
    那天傍晚,雨越下越大。
