(1) ①instead of意为“代替;而不(是)……”,后接名词、代词、动名词。
- I stayed in bed all day instead of going to work.
我一整天躺在床上而没去工作。 - He was ill, so I went to the meeting instead of him.
他生病了,所以我代他参加了会议。 - The space shuttle will land on the 18th of this month, instead of the 25th.
航天飞机将于本月18日返回,而不是25号。 - It's me/I that should ask you instead of you asking me.

②instead of有时可接动词原形、带to不定式、形容词或状语。
- I think we should do our homework first instead of watching television.
我想我们应该先做家庭作业而不是看电视。 - Aword of encouragement might have made me respect instead of hate him.
一句鼓励的话可能使我敬重而不是恨他。 - As a result, silver began to flow out of, instead of into, the country.

③instead of有时可用来连接两个谓语动词,两个动词在形式上应一致,其作用相当于一个连接词。
- That increased instead of decreased our courage to conquer these difficulties.

④instead of有时表示“不仅……反而”。
- Instead of saving the credit of the dollar, this can only make things worse.

⑤instead 有时可作副词,单独使用。
- Mr. Jones is ill, I have to come instead (of him) .

(2) in sb.'s stead 意为“代替某人”,与in sb.'s place, in place of/instead of sb.意思相同。
- I'll go to the meeting in his stead/in his place/instead of him.
我将代他参加会议。
(3) in (the) place of意为“代替”,常用于书面语中。
- Who will come here in place of the headmaster?
谁将来这儿代替这位校长? - Let's plant a willow in the place of the dead poplar.
咱们栽上棵柳树来取代这棵死去的白杨吧。
(4) for也可表示“代替;充当”。
- Since you are busy I'll go for you.
既然你忙,我将代你去。
