(1) It is said (that)..., It says..., They say (that)..., 均可译作“据说”；I'm told that..., I hear that...可译作“听说，据说”。

• They say that he will be transferred to another place.
  据说他将被调往别处。
• I'm told that a new foreigner from Canada is coming to teach in our department.
  听说从加拿大来的一位新外教将要来我系任教。
• I hear there'll be another raise in salary in the near future.
  听说，不久将再一次提薪。

 (2) the story/saying goes (that)...意思也是“据说”，多用在口语中。

• The story goes that he was once rich.
  据说他曾经很富有。

 (3) 新闻报道中常用的同义语为：It is reported that...据报道，It is disclosed that...据透露，A well informed source says that...消息灵通人士说等。

• It is reported that the NATO planes bombed a factory near Belgrade yesterday.
  据报道，北约飞机昨天轰炸了贝尔格莱德附近的一家工厂。

 (4) hear tell/say/speak/talk 是hear people/someone tell, say, speak, talk 的省略形式，多用于口语，偶尔也用于书面语。

• I hear say/tell/speak/talk that a holiday will be given on May 1st.
  听说五一放假一天。
