(1) ①kind和sort作“种，类”解，是常用词，kind较sort正式。
- She is the kind of woman who likes to help other people.
她是那种喜欢帮助别人的女人。 - She's not the kind (of person) to talk scandal.
她不是那种散布流言蜚语的人。
②kind既可置于介词of前，也可置于其后, 如：this kind of bikes, a bike of this kind，apples of several kinds, several kinds of apples等。
③kind of后接不可数名词时，可用kind的复数表示多种，如：various kinds of tea， all kinds of work。
(2) ①sort多用于口语或商业语言中，意思和用法与kind基本相同。
- We can't approve of this sort of thing/things of this sort.
我们不能赞成这种事情。 - Are these goods all of a sort?
这些货物全都是同一类吗？ - I'd like to give you two of each sort .
我想每一种给你两个。
②sort有时含有轻蔑意味。
- I don't like a man of that sort .
我不喜欢那种人。 - How did you get this sort of ideas into your head?
你脑袋里怎么会有这种想法?
③有时sort和kind一起使用，表示强调，意同汉语的“形形色色，各式各样”。
- You must learn to work together with people of every sort and kind .
你必须学会跟各式各样的人一起工作。
(3) class可作“种，类，门类，类别，等级”解。
- Name the classes of adjectives, with one example of each.
说出形容词的种类，每一种给一个例子。
(4) description，nature在英美报刊中有时作kind或sort用。
- She doesn't belong to people of that description .
她不属于那一类人。 - Things of this nature do not in the least interest me.
对这种事我丝毫不感兴趣。
(5) ①manner有时也用作kind，sort之意。
- What manner of human being can remain detached as he watches the dehumanization of other human beings?
在眼看着别人的人性被剥夺时，什么样的人能够保持超脱呢？ - What manner of man is he?
他是什么样的人？
②all manner of意思等于every kind of。
- As they strolled along they talked of all manner of things.
在他们散步时他们谈到了各种各样的事情。 - The antique shop was stocked with all manner of things from a milking stool to a four-poster bed.
这家古董商店从挤奶用的小凳到四柱床，各种东西应有尽有。
(6) ①type意为“型，式，样式，类型”。
- Her beauty is of the Italian type .
她的美貌是属于意大利类型的。 - They claim that they have made good Burgundy type of wine/wine of the Burgundy type in Australia.
他们声称在澳大利亚酿造出了优良的勃艮第式红葡萄酒。 - Our library keeps various types of newspapers.
我们的图书馆里保存着各种各样的报纸。
②type还作“典型，表率”解。
- Abraham Lincoln was a fine type of the American patriot.
亚伯拉罕·林肯是美国爱国者的一位优秀表率。 - Mary is of a very superior type of young womanhood.
玛丽属于年轻女子中出类拔萃的一类。
