(1) last可指“(此前的)上(前)一个”或“一系列当中的最后一个”；latest指“最新(近)的(事)”。

• A: What do you think of his latest play?
  你认为他最近的戏剧怎么样？
• B: I like it much better than his last one.
  比起上一部来，我更喜欢这一部。
• A: Have you heard the latest ? Jane's got married!
  你听到最近的事了吗？简结婚了。
  B: Oh, yes?
  是吗？

＊英语习惯说last night，不说 yesterday night; last evening， yesterday evening均可；说yesterday morning，却不说last morning。

 (2) last可用于引申意义，表示：

①“最不……的；极少可能的；最不合适的”。

• That's the last thing one can say about it.
  那是最不该说的话。
• To invent a lie about my mistake is the last thing I'll do.
  说谎话来掩饰我的错误是我最不愿意做的事。
• He is the last man I want to see.
  他是我最不想见的人。

②“结论性的，权威性的”，这时，可与final互换。

• The professor has given the last explanation to this problem in his article.
  这位教授在他的文章中对这个问题做出了权威性的解释。
• Marx has said the last word on the problem in his Critique of the Gotha Program.
  马克思在他的《哥达纲领批判》中已对这个问题发表了权威性意见。

③还可作“最低的”解。

• He won the last prize in the contest.
  他获得这次比赛的最低奖项。

 (3) last和latest均为late的最高级。last表示顺序上的“最后”；latest表示时间上的“最近”。有时两者可以换用。

• Do you have the latest/last news about the situation in Yugoslavia?
  你有关于南斯拉夫形势的最近消息吗？
