(1) mature意为“成熟的，长成的”，通常用来形容人或动物，侧重指发育方面的完成，如：persons of mature years(成年人)。还可用于引申意义，表示“慎重的，完善的，周密的”。

• The plan will have to be made after mature deliberation.
  要在周密思考之后才能制订该项计划。
• I don't think this is a mature plan.
  我认为这不是一项成熟的计划。

 (2) ①ripe用于谷物、水果等的“成熟”，如：ripe fruit/corn。

• The cherries are not ripe enough to eat.
  樱桃还没熟到可以吃。

②ripe也可用于引申意义，如：ripe lips 红润的唇；ripe cheese/wine 已制成的干酪/酿成的酒。

③ripe还有“发展，完成”的意思，如：ripe judgement/scholarship 成熟的判断力/丰富的学识。

• I think the time is ripe for settling the problem.
  我认为解决问题的时机已成熟。
• I know an excellent man whom I would like to put up as the best person for the chairmanship, he is a person of ripe age.
