在这些词和短语中，前面四个都可表示“与此同时；在这段时间；在此期间”，指两个事件之间的时间，可以作为同义的词语互换使用。

 (1) meanwhile, meantime既可作副词，又可作名词。作名词时，主要用于in the meanwhile, in the meantime短语；in the meantime还有“在这之前”的意思。

• The train doesn't leave for an hour; meanwhile I'm going to take a nap.
  火车还要有一个小时才开，在这期间我要小睡一会儿。
• He was in London for a week and meanwhile/meantime he went on with the work.
  他在伦敦待了一周，在此期间，他继续做着这项工作。
• You will be allowed to rest shortly; in the meantime you must keep working.
  一会儿就叫你休息，在这之前你必须继续工作。
• This wanted a bit more thinking about, and, in the meantime/in the meanwhile , there were a hundred and one little things to be done.
  这件事还需要再考虑一下，在这之前，还得做很多琐碎的事。
• Go there and come back as soon as possible; in the meantime/in the meanwhile we'll go on with the work.
  你到那里去，然后尽可能早地回来，在此期间我们将继续这项工作。

 (2) at the same time意为“同时，但与此同时，尽管如此”，指两个(以上)的事情同时发生。

• He went to New York and at the same time we went on with the experiment.
  他去了纽约，与此同时，我们继续做这个试验。
• He did pass the test; at the same time he didn't know the subject very well.
  他的确通过了测试，尽管如此，他对这一学科还是不太懂。
• The two runners reached the finish line at the same time .
  这两个运动员同时抵达终点线。

 (3) simultaneously意为“同时地”，在此意义上可与at the same time替换。

• Thunder and lightning happen simultaneously/at the same time .
  雷和闪电是同时发生的。
• The PLA launched powerful attacks simultaneously from four sides.
  人民解放军从四面同时发动猛烈的进攻。
