mix, blend, mingle 与 merge 这些词都有“混合”的意思。

 (1) mix指把两种或两种以上的不同物质混合而形成一种新的物质，强调混合物或多或少保持未混合前的状态、性能等，但不一定能辨别出来。

• She mixed flour and milk together.
  她把面粉与牛奶混合起来。
• He mixed blue with yellow paint to produce the green color.
  他把蓝色和黄色颜料混合调成绿色。

 (2) blend可与mix换用，但强调混合整体的统一性与协调性。

• These colors blend well with each other.
  这些颜色彼此很调和。
• Oil and water do not blend .
  油和水不相融合。

 (3) mingle指多种东西混合在一起，但暗示混合后的各种成分仍保持各自的特性，能明显地区别或辨别出来。

• The smell of perfume and perspiration mingled in the air.
  空气中香水味和汗臭混杂在一起。
• Mary looked at him, pity and disgust mingled on her face.
  玛丽望着他，脸上露出怜悯与憎恨交集的表情。

 (4) merge指一种成分被另一种成分吸收或融合，强调成分的个性消失在整体之中。

• These two companies have merged to cut costs.
  这两家公司已合并，以节省开支。
• In this great melting pot, cultures are merged and traditions lost.
  在这个种族大熔炉中，各种文化融为一体，原来的传统则消失了。
