(1) 当说及本周/月/年之后的下周/月/年时，用next，不用the next。

• I will be abroad next Christmas.
  下个圣诞节时我将在国外。

 (2) 如说及从目前开始的一段时间(一周、一月、一年等)时，要用the next。

• I'm going very busy for the next week.
  今后一周我将会非常忙碌。(从今天起的7天时间)
• The next year will be very difficult.
  今后的一年将会非常艰难。(从现在开始的12个月)

 (3) the next/following也可指过去或将来某个时间后的日子(次日、次周、次月、次年等)。

• I'm sorry I should be away from home that week and the next (=the following week).
  我为那一周和随后一周要离开家而颇感遗憾。
• On that day and the next he was travelling.
  那天和第二天他都在旅行。
• In the following/next year, 1878, they also gained control of the Senate.
  第二年，1878年，他们把参议院也控制了。
• In 1855 she was 46; the next year, 1856, she was 47.
  1855年她是46岁，下一年，1856年，她47岁。

 (4) 当说及场所、人物、事物、活动、事件等时，要用the next。

• We missed the train, and had to wait twenty minutes for the next one.
  我们未乘上那列火车，得等20分钟后的下一辆了。
• When is the next meeting/match?
  何时召开下次会议/进行下次比赛？
