(1) no是形容词，可用于单数和复数名词前。
- No cigarette is completely harmless.
没有哪种香烟是完全无害的。 - There were no letters for you this morning, I'm afraid.
恐怕今早没有你的信。
(2) 名词前没有冠词、物主形容词或指示词时，用no；在冠词、物主形容词、指示词前要用none of(=not any of)。
- None of the furniture got wet, fortunately.
幸运的是，这些家具都没湿。 - None of my friends live near here.
我的朋友没有住在这附近的。 - I like none of that music.
我不喜欢那些音乐。 - He's paid none of his bills.
他的账单都没有付。
(3) none of也可以用于代词之前；none 可作为代词单独使用。
- None of them came in time.
他们没有一个人及时到来。 - A: How many of the books have you read?
这些书你已读了多少本了？
B: None at all.
一本也没读。
(4) none of 接复数名词作主语时，谓语动词可以是单数，也可以是复数。 在非正式文体中，用复数动词更常见。
- None of her relations live/lives in this city.
她没有一个亲戚住在这个城市里。
(5) 当谈论两个人或事物时，表示“哪一个也不”时用neither。
- Neither of his parents helped him.
他的父母谁也没有帮他。
(6) no-one等于nobody，不能接of。
- No-one wished me a happy birthday.
没有一个人祝我生日快乐。 - I stayed in all evening waiting, but no-one came.
我在家等了整整一个晚上，但一个人也没来。
＊在美式英语中，no-one 不用连字符(no one)。no one除指人外，又可指物(no-one则不能)：
- I read three books on the subject, no one of which was helpful.

(7) 要表示“连一个也不……”之意，通常使用none (of), not any (of), not one (of)，后两个的意味更强。
- None of my friends wished me a happy birthday.
没有一个朋友祝我生日快乐。 - Not one of my shirts is clean.
我的衬衫没有一件是干净的。
(8) none 可与too 连用，表示“不太，一点也不”。
- The doctor arrived none too soon, as Mary's fever was very alarming.
医生来得太慢，而玛丽烧得吓人。 - These instructions are none too clear.
这些说明一点也不清楚。 - They're offering me $50,000 a year and considering the cost of living, I think that wage is none too high.

(9) none还可用于成语：
①none the less 意为“尽管如此……仍然”。
- It was a highly unequal alliance but an alliance none the less .
尽管它是一个很不平等的联盟，但仍然是一个联盟。 - They had apologized to him, but he was none the less angry.

②none the wiser可作“不(会)知道”解。
- If we take one piece of cake, mother will be none the wiser .

(10) ①no常与-ing形式连用来表示不允许做某事，此结构可单独使用(如告示牌)，也可用在there is之后。
- NO PARKING, NO WAITING.
禁止停车，禁止等候。 - Sorry, there is no smoking in the waiting room.
抱歉，候诊室不允许吸烟。
②know, tell, say, predict, deny, joke, account等动词的-ing形式用在“there is no -ing”结构中，表示“不(可)能……；无法……”。
- There is no joking about such matter.
这种事不能开玩笑。 - There is no denying the fact that the new method has greatly raised labor productivity.
不可否认，新方法大大提高了劳动生产效率。 - There's no saying what he would have accomplished if he had lived.
如果他活着的话，能取得什么样的成就，那是难以预言的。 - There's no accounting for the restlessness he was seized with recently.
他为何最近突然感到不安是难以解释清楚的。 - There's no knowing/telling/saying when the U.S. will launch the attack.
