(1) ①prepare用作及物动词，可接所需时间较短、过程不复杂的事物作宾语，如：prepare one's lessons, prepare a meal等；也可接双宾语。
- My wife quickly prepared me a meal.
妻子很快就为我准备好了饭。
②prepare也可直接与不定式连用。
- He has been busy preparing to go abroad.
他一直在忙着准备出国。
(2) prepare against意为“为应付(不幸事件如灾害、战争等)做准备”。
- We must do everything to prepare against war.
我们必须全力备战。
(3) ①prepare for意思是“为……做好准备”，意味着所需时间较长，程序也较复杂。
- He was busy preparing for the conference.
他在忙着为会议做准备。 - The doctor told his aids to prepare for the operation at once.
医生告诉他的助手们马上为手术做好准备。
②也可用prepare sth. for...的形式。
- When I went there, they were preparing the soil for transplanting rice seedlings.
我去那里时，他们正在翻土施肥，为插秧做准备。 - I must prepare myself for the qualifying exam.

(4) be prepared可与for连用，也可接不定式。
- You ought to be prepared for some unpleasantness.

(5) ①make preparations for意为“(采取各项措施、步骤以便)为某事做好准备”。
- We now have only a week or so to make preparations for the exam.

②make preparations也可接不定式。
- They make preparations to frustrate the conspiracy.

③get/make sth. ready (for)也是“为(某事)做好准备，为(某事)而把……准备好”，强调动作；而be ready强调准备好的状态。
- You make the rooms ready for the guests.

(6) fit (sb.) for意思是“使……适合于；(使……)为……做好准备”。
- You can best fit yourself for your new responsibility by studying all these papers left by the former chairman.
通过研究前任主席留下的这些文件，你可以使自己最好地为你担负的新职责做好准备。 - He is fitting for college. (=He is preparing for college.)

(7) fix也有“准备，安排”之意，特别是美式英语中。
- Come back when you finish your business. I will fix a lunch for you.

(8) provide for也可表示“为(可能出现的危险、困难等情况)做准备，防备”(另见“provide, supply”条)。
- He worked hard and put aside as much money as possible to provide for his old age.
